Introduction

Going to the cinema was more than a childhood treat for me, it was almost a religious festival. The lights going down evoked the entry into an inner sanctum. My parents used to combine such treats with meals at a Chinese restaurant in Norwich.

For a time I was an amateur film critic, focussed on Hong Kong films. I did once interview people like John Woo and Yuen Woo-ping and Shinya Tsukamoto. I went regularly to the London Film Theatre on the South Bank, and to the Scala near King's Cross Station. One year I saw over 20 films in the London Film Festival.

There is enough overlap between my and Virginia's tastes for us to go to the cinema together in Cambridge every now and then. Often combined with eating at all you can eat Chinese buffet nearby.
