Philip José Farmer
|
Philip José Farmer is a very inventive and prolific writer. Ideas tumble around in his stories seemingly out of control. Farmer has read and digested a wide of range of books. This is reflected in what he writes which echoes Edgar Rice Burroughs as much as it echoes Homer. Especially interesting to read are Farmer's own comments on where his ideas come from, on story development, and the like. For example the Phantasia Press editions of the "World of Tiers" books have valuable forewords by Farmer. At best Farmer's work is escapist adventure stories mixed with universe sized imagination mixed with Homerian epic. |

The Dayworld trilogy is set in a future Earth where to avoid over-crowding we all live just one day a week, being frozen in time for the other six. However a rebel seeks to beat the system by living as different people on the seven days of the week. Will this "day-breaker" stay ahead of the authorities? Dayworld published in 1984 (perhaps appropriately) is the first book in the trilogy. A rich cast of characters, allied to Farmer's luxuriant imagination.
