Moving away from iWeb

April 1st, 2009

../../resources/IMG1998.jpg I have decided to move away from using Apple's iWeb for most of my website. There's a number of reasons.

iWeb pages are slow to load. iWeb generates a lot of files, with considerable duplication. The files can contain timestamps thus complicating checking for what has changed.

The way Apple have implemented the menus (generated at runtime by Javascript parsing XML files) get in the way of the pages being indexed by search engines.

On a lot of my pages I want to display lists or tables of information. One can embed HTML snippets into iWeb pages, but only as <iframe> elements. This doesn't look good to me.

I still plan to use iWeb to do the photo galleries, but not for the main structure of my personal website. Instead I'm once again rolling my own website generation code!
